Nestled in Southern Oregon’s arid landscape, Summer Lake Hot Springs beckons visitors from all over the Pacific Northwest with its therapeutic waters. These waters flow into three inviting outdoor pools and a seasonal indoor pool, all set against the dramatic backdrop of a valley framed by distant mountains. This serene spot, situated just two hours southeast of Bend, offers an unparalleled view of cattle grazing among the junipers and tumbleweeds, creating a scene that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle.
Those journeying to this 145-acre haven can choose between three accommodation options: setting up camp (either in an RV or tent), booking a cabin, or staying in one of the guesthouses. On our visit in late April, we were greeted by clear skies and pleasant temperatures in the mid-50s to 60s – perfect for basking in the three natural rock pools, each offering its own depth and warmth around 104º F. As you relax, enjoy the constant flow of warm water from PVC pipes into these pools. Don’t forget to keep a refreshing drink close by (preferably in a non-glass container) and let yourself melt into relaxation at any time of day or night.
For nighttime soaking, we recommend using the red light setting on your flashlight or headlamp to minimize disturbance to others and protect your night vision. The lack of city lights makes stargazing at Summer Lake an ethereal experience. Although the indoor pool was closed during our visit, the adjacent changing rooms and showers were open for use. When summer’s heat arrives, a plunge into this pool, with temperatures around 98º F, promises a rejuvenating experience.
Our journey took us over the Willamette Pass to an RV spot, equipped with all essential amenities ($55/night, inclusive of pool access). We did encounter persistent winds, which made setting up and taking down the awning a quick endeavor. Still, the proximity to indoor bathrooms with geothermally heated floors and impressive showers was a luxury.
Many visitors prefer the more secluded experience of staying in the resort’s guesthouses or cabins. These offer a real escape – no TVs or WiFi to distract from the natural beauty around. Soak in the pools, take leisurely walks to the dried-up lake bed, discover the hidden labyrinth, or simply attune yourself to the calls of birds and frogs. Looking for a change? Head to Paisley’s local saloon for a meal or explore the historical Paisley Caves. Adventurous souls can also embark on day trips to natural wonders like Crack in the Ground or Fort Rock State Natural Area.
We genuinely cherished our time at Summer Lake Hot Springs and hope you’ll find the same enchantment. Safe travels and enjoy every moment!
