Nestled between Jaco and San Jose in Costa Rica, Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge offers a serene escape within the expansive Parque Nacional Los Quetzales. This national park, spanning 50 square kilometers, is enveloped by the Los Santos Forest Reserve on three sides and the Tapantí National Park to its northeast.
Reaching the lodge entails a mesmerizing journey through the ‘cloud forest,’ named aptly for its ethereal ambiance. The drive itself is both breathtaking and at moments, challenging due to the mountainous rainforest landscape.
Every accommodation, from bungalows to terrace junior suites, is designed with expansive picture windows. These allow guests to immerse themselves in the stunning mountain views. It’s a rare treat to recline in bed and watch clouds dance over mountain peaks. The luxurious soaking tubs add another layer of relaxation, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.
For those keen to explore, Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge boasts a variety of hiking trails. They cater to all levels, from leisurely paved paths to advanced trails that demand attention and preparedness. Guided group hikes are a popular choice, especially during early mornings when the vibrant quetzals typically emerge to feed. Remember to pack your binoculars or spotting scope during these hikes, and if you’re visiting between August and November, expect to be greeted by blooming wild orchids.
On-site, the lodge offers a gift shop and a dining room serving traditional meals. While there are a few restaurants along the nearby dirt road, nighttime ventures are discouraged due to safety concerns. The lodge is welcoming to both kids and pets; and yes, there’s a trampoline – an amenity we may have tried out to give a comprehensive review.
For an additional treat, the guest services arranged a guided horseback ride for us with a local stable, costing $60 per person. This two-hour adventure allowed us to traverse scenic trails, pause for a waterfall hike, and even cross mountain streams. The trails are frequented by families, photographers, and bird enthusiasts.
If you opt for this horseback journey, it’s wise to wear long pants and a sun hat for protection. And while the descent into the underground cavern at the waterfall base isn’t suited for all, it offers a thrilling experience for those who venture.
Our stay at Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge, inclusive of meals and laundry service, amounted to around $300 for a night. The entire experience is a testimony to the natural beauty and warm hospitality that Costa Rica has to offer.
